The Lifespan of Makeup and What You Should Splurge On

Makeup can be expensive and sometimes you have had a product for a long time and there is still a lot of it left. It's not always safe to keep using a product after its expiration date, no matter how much you don't want to have to purchase a new one when there is still plenty left.

Mascara and liquid eyeliners only last 3-6 months. These are products that it's better to buy cheaper ones because you definitely need to replace them often. If you go through a lot for mascara or eyeliner and will use up the whole bottle before six months, then go ahead and buy a more expensive brand. But if you wear it infrequently and are going to be throwing it out before you even get halfway through, don't splurge.

Makeup in powder forms, such as eye shadows, loose pressed powder, blush and contour can last from 2-3 years. So go ahead and buy a color that you love but don't know how often you will get use out of it. I'm sure in the next 3 years you will have plenty of opportunities to get your money's worth out of it.

Liquid and Cream makeup, such as foundations, blush, eye shadows, eye creams bronzers, highlights and contour last from 12-18 months. I think for the most part if you wear foundation everyday you will use it up before you have to worry about getting rid of it, so buy something that you really like. As for the others, it depends on how much you use them whether or not you should spend extravagantly.

Lipstick and lip gloss last from 1-2 years. Again I think this is a product that is usually all used up or lost before it expirers.

Eye, lip and brow pencils can last around 2-3 years.

Nail polish lasts from 1-2 years if it's stored in a cool dry place. It often gets clumpy and sticky and hard to use when it's approaching its expiration date. Plus nail polish is relatively cheap and can be easily replaced.

Perfume can last 2-3 years also if stored in a cool, dry place. If the smell starts to change from what it's supposed to be then its time to chuck it and move on.

Most sunscreen can last from 2-3 years, but also has an expiration date on the label. To be safe and make sure you are getting the best sun protection it's a good idea to buy a new bottle every summer.

Moisturizers last from 12-18 months, so if you want to get the best results from them be sure not too keep them any longer.

To get the best shelf life of any cosmetic products be sure to store them in cool dry places out of sunlight. Also make sure to put the caps back on tightly to prevent spillage or drying out.
